ABOUT THE GURU

After retiring from sportswriting in 2003, Samuel Chi decided to kick back with the family in Florida -- enjoying the sunshine, working on the golf game, watching football on TV, and oh yeah, running a bed & breakfast. Life was good.

But all that changed in the fall of 2006. After one too many e-mails from a college pal about the state of crisis in college football, Sam dusted off his keyboard and textbooks on statistics and voila, re-entered public life as the BCS Guru.

An award-winning sports journalist, Sam wrote for the San Francisco Chronicle/Examiner, Contra Costa Times, Pasadena Star-News and, proudly, the Daily Titan. During his 15-year career in the news business, Sam covered a variety of events ranging from the Super Bowl, Rose Bowl, Final Four and the Masters to the Tour de France, soccer World Cup and the changeover of Hong Kong from Britain to China.

Just to provide some assurance of neutrality, Sam graduated with a degree in journalism from Cal State Fullerton, a school that discontinued its football program in 1992 but is a four-time national champion in baseball. Sam went to graduate school at UCLA; but despite his two years in Westwood, he feels no allegiance to the Bruins whatsoever.

Beyond college football, Sam has always had an affinity for politics. In August 2007, he created The Berlinzoo blog, featuring commentaries on global political affairs and sports. In April 2008, he added Sinotaneous, a site dedicated to all things Chinese.

THE GURU RETURNS

On Dec. 2, 2006, after Florida wrapped up a 38-28 victory over Arkansas in the SEC championship game, the nation waited anxiously to see if the Gators’ win would’ve been enough to catapult them into the BCS championship game against Ohio State. For many, it was a sleepless night.

Only if they’d checked with the BCS Guru first.

As the clock ticked down in the Georgia Dome, the BCS Guru was the first to project, accurately, that the Gators indeed would nudge out Michigan for a spot in the national championship game. The readers of BCSGuru.com an attest to the accuracy of the Guru’s reports every week since the site was launched on Oct. 13, 2006.

The Guru did one better in 2007, not only correctly picking the LSU-Ohio State matchup in the BCS title game, he was 5-for-5 on the five BCS bowl lineup, all posted minutes after both No. 1 Missouri and No. 2 West Virginia were upset on Dec. 1, 2007.

Since the birth of the BCS Guru website in October 2006, the Guru has made a number of media appearances, both in print and on the radio. He was featured, among others, in the Los Angeles Times, New York Sun, Honolulu Advertiser, KNX (1070-AM, Los Angeles), KSPN (710-AM, Los Angeles), Rivals Radio and Sports Byline USA .
